Gold rate today: Yellow metal down Rs 6,700 per 10 grams from peak - what’s the price trend on May 2, 2025?

Gold rate today on May 2, 2025: In the last few days, Gold June futures at MCX have seen considerable selling pressure from peak levels, declining by Rs 6,700/10 grams due to positive developments in US-China trade talks and strengthening dollar.
Today, Gold June futures started trading 0.35% higher at Rs 92,665 per 10 grams, showing an increase of Rs 326, whilst silver July futures increased 0.46% to Rs 95,168 per kg, advancing by Rs 439.
The previous day witnessed gold and silver closing lower in both domestic and international markets. Gold June futures settled at Rs 92,339 per 10 grams, declining 2.50%, whilst silver July futures ended at Rs 94,729 per kilogram, dropping 1.24%.
Precious metals prices experienced a sharp correction following U.S. President Donald Trump’s statements regarding possible trade agreements with India, South Korea, and Japan, alongside ongoing discussions with China.

The dollar index strengthened following these remarks, surpassing the 100 level. The US Dollar Index, DXY, was trading around 100.02, showing a decrease of 0.23 or 0.23% today.
“Gold prices slipped to 2-week lows and silver prices also tested $32 per troy ounce levels. Traders also booked profits in their long positions ahead of the U.S. monthly job reports,” said Manoj Kumar Jain of Prithvifinmart Commodity Research according to an ET report.
The U.S. GDP showed contraction in the previous quarter, with unemployment claims rising again, potentially creating conditions for U.S. Fed rate reductions and providing support for precious metals prices at lower levels.
“We expect gold and silver prices to remain volatile in today’s session amid volatility in the dollar index and ahead of the U.S. job data; gold prices could hold its support level of $3,200 per troy ounce and silver prices could also hold $31.40 per troy ounce levels on a weekly closing basis,” Jain added.

Tariff talks back on table? China says 'evaluating' US offer, 'door open'

China has said it is open to trade negotiations with the United States but warned that talks cannot proceed unless Washington shows genuine intent by reversing its unilateral tariff measures.
According to news agency Associated Press, the statement, issued Friday by China’s commerce ministry, said that Beijing is currently assessing several approaches made by the Trump administration to reinitiate discussions. But it stressed that one-sided tariff hikes—some reaching 145%—will have to go.
“China’s position is consistent. If we fight, we will fight to the end; if we talk, the door is open. The tariff and trade wars were unilaterally initiated by the US. If the US side wants to talk, it should show its sincerity and be ready to correct wrong practices, including cancelling the unilateral imposition of tariffs,” the ministry said, quoting an unnamed spokesperson.
According to the statement, senior US officials have recently conveyed, through intermediaries, a willingness to engage in discussions. China has acknowledged these attempts but cautioned that simply expressing interest is not enough.
The US “says one thing but does another,” the spokesperson said, adding that China would not respond to any attempt at coercion or “blackmail under the guise of talks”.
In retaliation to US president Donald Trump’s tariff hikes, China raised import duties on US goods to as high as 125%, restricted exports of key minerals, and halted imports of a range of American agricultural products.

Stock market today: Indian equity benchmark indices, Nifty50 and BSE Sensex, opened in green on Friday, the first trading day of the month. While Nifty50 rose over 100 points to cross 24,400, BSE Sensex was above 80,600. At 9:19 AM, Nifty50 was trading at 24,424.00, up 90 points or 0.37%.BSE Sensex was at 80,679.58, up 437 points or 0.55%.
Market experts anticipate range-bound trading with focus on individual stocks and sectors, primarily influenced by fourth quarter results.
VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited says, “After the sharp market correction triggered by Trump’s reciprocal tariffs and the Pahalgam terror strikes, April has closed with above 4% gains in Nifty. This surprising resilience of the market has been primarily driven by the sustained FII buying for eleven trading days in a row taking the cumulative FII buying for this period to Rs 37375 crores.FII buying has been driven by weakness in the dollar and declining growth prospects in the US. Other macros like declining interest rates in India, decline in the crude price and green shoots of pickup in demand are positives for the market. The high probability of India among the five ‘allies’ of the US entering into early trade deals with the US is also a significant positive factor. However, at the current juncture of high valuations (Nifty trading at above 20 times estimated FY 26 earnings) and high India-Pak tensions, the near-term risk-reward is not in favour of high reward. Therefore, investors can play it safe by increasing the cash component in the portfolio even while remaining invested.”
US equities moved higher on Thursday, with both Dow and S&P 500 achieving their eighth consecutive positive session, supported by robust performance from technology giants Microsoft and Meta, alleviating AI investment concerns.
Asian equities showed modest gains while US index futures recovered losses on Friday following China’s announcement regarding potential trade discussions with the US.
Gold prices were heading towards their largest weekly decline in over two months on Friday, as diminishing trade conflicts reduced safe-haven appeal. Investors await the U.S. non-farm payrolls report scheduled for release later in the day.
The U.S. dollar advanced towards its third consecutive weekly rise, supported by positive developments in trade discussions with partners and stronger-than-anticipated economic data, bolstering confidence in the U.S. economy.
Foreign portfolio investors shifted to net purchases at Rs 50.57 crore on Wednesday. Domestic institutional investors acquired shares valued at Rs 1792 crore.

IPL 2025: Mumbai Indians achieve historic first in 13-years against Rajasthan Royals

Mumbai Indians secured a commanding 100-run victory over Rajasthan Royals at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Thursday, with captain Hardik Pandya becoming only the third MI skipper to achieve this feat at RR’s home ground. The win featured outstanding performances from the top-order batters and bowlers Trent Boult and Karn Sharma, who each claimed three wickets.
Pandya’s unbeaten 48 off 23 balls contributed to MI’s impressive total of 217/2 in the first innings. The team’s bowling attack then dismantled RR, bowling them out for just 117 runs in 16.1 overs.

This victory marks a significant milestone as only two previous MI captains, Harbhajan Singh in 2012 and Sachin Tendulkar in 2010, had managed to defeat RR in Jaipur. Since then, MI did win away to Royals but those wins Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad (in 2014) and DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai (in 2022). As far as Jaipur is concerned, RR had stitched five straight wins over MI at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium before the emphatic loss on Thursday evening.
MI skipper Pandya showcased his all-round abilities by taking the wicket of Shubham Dubey in his sole over.
“Everyone is very clear and we are going back to simple cricket, it is working for us and hopefully it continues. We want to be humble, very disciplined and keep focusing. We could have got another 15 runs. What we were trying to speak to each other was to play percentage shots. Surya and I said there’s value for shots… Ro (Rohit) and Ryan batted the same way. I think it was absolutely fantastic. It is never about people getting chances; it’s about what is required in the situation. People are going back to batsmanship. As a group, the way we batted was proper batsmanship,” Pandya said at the post-match presentation.

It’s always a big desire for me to take on the best players: Trent Boult

“We have to give credit to the way MI played. The way they batted, took the game a little deep, kept the 10 runs per over consistency, and accelerated in the end. As far as our batting is concerned, it wasn’t our day,” RR skipper Riyan Parag acknowledged.
The victory extends Mumbai Indians’ winning streak to six matches in the tournament. Despite losing four of their first five games, they have now climbed to the top of the points table.

Top stocks to buy today: Stock recommendations for May 2, 2025
Top stocks to buy (AI image)

Stock market recommendations: According to Bajaj Broking Research, Eternal (Zomato) and KEI Industries are the top stock picks for today. Here’s its view on Nifty, Bank Nifty and the top stock picks for May 2, 2025:
Index View: NIFTY
Indian equity benchmarks during last week maintain a positive yet cautious bias, given the lingering geopolitical tensions and tariff related development. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that several top trading partners had made “very good” proposals to avoid US tariffs, with India likely to be among the first to finalize a deal which boosted sentiments.
Going ahead, Nifty is expected to extend consolidation in the range of 24,550-23,800. With 23,800 being the confluence of last week’s low and recent breakout area. While 24,550 is the 61.8% retracement of the entire decline (26,277-21,744).
We believe the current consolidation will help the index work off the overbought condition developed after the recent strong rally. Stock specific action will continue to remain in focus as we progress through the Q4 earnings season.
Overall structure remains positive, and we believe the current consolidation should be used as a buying opportunity in quality stocks for an up move towards the December 2024 high of 24,850 in the coming weeks.
Globally Investors will keep a close eye on the earnings from the “magnificent seven” megacaps, including Apple Inc, Microsoft Corporation, Amazon and Meta Platforms Inc, this week.
Investors braced for a busy week with a series of U.S. economic data releases, including the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge – the PCE price index, and the monthly U.S. jobs report. The U.S. will also report its first-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) data this week.
NIFTY BANK

  • Bank Nifty consolidated in a 2000 points range in the last 6 sessions after the recent strong rally of 5500 points or 11% in the preceding 6 sessions underpinned by robust institutional accumulation in frontline banking counters and a notable revival in FII inflows—reflecting a clear risk-on undertone. Rate cut hopes and positive result of the large cap private Banks boosted sentiment.
  • A sustained move above the recent high of 56,098 could trigger further upside toward the 56,800 levels in the coming sessions. However, if the index fails to surpass this level, the index is likely to extend the last 6 sessions consolidation within the 54,000–56,000 range, helping to ease the overbought conditions created by the recent sharp rally.
  • On the downside, key support is seen between 54,000-53,500, which corresponds to the gap-up region and the previous significant breakout zone.
  • Volatility is expected to stay elevated due to ongoing geopolitical tensions, developments related to tariffs, and the unfolding Q4 earnings season.

Stock Recommendations:
Eternal (Zomato)
Buy in the range of Rs 228-233

Target SL Return Time Period
Rs 255 216 11% 3 Months

The stock has generated a breakout above a falling channel containing last 3 months price action and is sustaining above the 50 days EMA signaling strength and reversal of the corrective trend.
The 14 periods RSI in the weekly chart is seen sustaining above its nine periods average thus validates positive bias in the stock. We expect the stock to head higher towards 255 levels in the medium term being the 138.2% external retracement of the last 3 months breather (242-195)
KEI Industries
Buy in the range of Rs 3000.00-3070.00

Target SL Return Time Period
Rs 3350 2870 10% 3 Months

The share price of Kei Industries has generated a breakout above a falling channel containing last 4 months decline signaling reversal of the corrective trend and resumption of up move.
The weekly 14 periods RSI has generated a buy signal moving above its nine periods average. We expect the stock to head towards 3350 levels in the coming month being the 38.2% retracement of the entire breather (5039-2424)

Who is Kavan Markwood? Viral video shows ex-football player identified as fan fall 21 feet at Pirates-Cubs game

A night meant for baseball glory turned tragic when Kavan Markwood, a 20-year-old former college football player, fell 21 feet from the stands at PNC Park during the Pirates vs. Cubs game on Wednesday. The terrifying moment, caught on video, has gone viral across social media platforms, drawing concern and sympathy from fans nationwide.
The incident unfolded just as Andrew McCutchen delivered a clutch two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving the Pittsburgh Pirates a 4–3 lead. As cheers erupted, cameras and spectators captured the moment Markwood tumbled from above the iconic Clemente Wall, landing on the warning track in right field.
The game was paused for about 10 minutes while EMS, police, and on-field staff rushed to assist. Markwood was quickly transported to Allegheny General Hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Officials have said the fall is being treated as accidental.
The viral video has since stunned sports fans and raised questions about stadium safety. While authorities have not released the footage officially, clips circulating online show the immediate shock in the stadium as the crowd realized what had happened.
Later identified by the South Allegheny School District, Markwood is a McKeesport native and a former linebacker for Wheeling University. He played five games in 2023 and was known for his grit, strength, and leadership.
“He’s a fighter. He’s touched a lot of lives at South Allegheny,” said school spokesperson Laura Thomson. “We’re a small community. He’s a household name here.”
Pirates Chairman Bob Nutting called the fall a “terrible accident” and said the organization was heartbroken: “It was one of the most difficult moments many of us have ever experienced… Pirates baseball is a community, and our fans are like family.”
Though the Pirates snapped their three-game losing streak with McCutchen’s seventh-inning heroics, the night was defined not by the win, but by the horrifying scene that played out in real time — and online.

Most US iPhones to be 'sourced' in India, says Apple CEO amid trade war with China

NEW DELHI: Apple CEO Tim Cook on Thursday said that most US iPhones would be “sourced” in India amid rising tariff tensions between the States and China.
He said he expected a “majority of iPhones sold in the US will have India as their country of origin.”
He noted that trade tariffs targeting imports from China—where Apple manufactures many of its iPhones—could cost the company as much as $900 million. He, however, said that the exact impact of the tariffs remains difficult to predict.
Despite trade pressures, Apple posted stronger-than-expected earnings for the first three months of the year, with Cook noting that tariffs had only a limited impact on the company’s fiscal second-quarter results.
It reported solid earnings for the first three months of the year, posting a 4.8% increase in profit to $24.78 billion, or $1.65 per share, up from $23.64 billion, or $1.53 per share, a year ago. Revenue rose 5.1% to $95.36 billion from $90.75 billion.
Trump’s announcement of a 145% tariff on Chinese-made goods, including iPhones, triggered a rush among US consumers to buy devices ahead of expected price hikes. However, the surge in sales won’t be reflected in Apple’s earnings until the April-June quarter. The renewed trade war has intensified pressure on Cook to replicate the diplomatic maneuvering that previously helped shield the iPhone from tariffs during Trump’s first term.

'Don't think you've won the war': Amit Shah to Pahalgam perpetrators

NEW DELHI: Home minister Amit Shah Thursday said terrorists are mistaken if they believe that by killing innocent civilians in Pahalgam, they have won the war, as he publicly vowed a targeted response against each and every one involved in the atrocity and pledged to uproot every act of terrorism from Indian soil. He added that those responsible for the attack will be held accountable and given appropriate response.
“Today, they should not think that by killing 27 citizens, they have won the war. I want to tell all the perpetrators of terrorism that this is not the end of the fight but only a turning point… ek makam hai, har vyakti ko chun-chun kar jawab milega, jawab bhi liya jayega (each one involved will be given a fitting response and will be held accountable too),” Shah said in his first public speech after the slaughter of tourists at Pahalgam.
Shah, who was addressing a meeting after the unveiling of the statue of Upendranath Brahma, a leading figure among the Bodos, in Delhi, asserted that the fight against terrorists and their backers would continue until each one of perpetrators is punished.
Shah said BJP govt, under PM Modi’s leadership, has effectively tackled terror threats everywhere – be it in the northeast, areas impacted by left-wing extremism, or in Kashmir – and has given befitting responses. “If anyone thinks that a cowardly attack is their big victory, they must remember this is Narendra Modi’s India – none will be spared. Our resolve is to uproot terrorism from every inch of India, and it will become a reality,” he added.
Soon after the terror attack, the home minister had rushed to Srinagar and visited Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam. He met the grieving families and vowed that the “culprits of this dastardly terror attack will not be spared”.
Last week, the PM in his first remarks at a public event in Bihar, had issued a similar warning. “We will go to the ends of the earth to find the perpetrators,” he had said.
Shah, in his address, said no Bodo should have an inferiority complex; they have the same rights in the country as the home minister himself.
Recalling the signing of Bodo Accord in 2020 after nine months of discussions, Shah said everyone dropped their weapons and joined the mainstream. “I want to tell all tribes that BJP govt honours the pacts it signs. We are implementing several agreements that were signed before us. They (earlier govts) did not follow them. We have cleared 96% of issues that were part of Bodo Accord. We will resolve 100% issues before next election in Assam,” he added.
The home minister said that Modi govt has signed over 20 accords in the northeast and over 10,000 people have surrendered and integrated inro the society. “On an average, 78% of the issues have been resolved in the past four years… This shows what we do what we say,” he added.
Earlier, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sharma highlighted the progress made in the state under BJP rule and said that the state, which previously used to see violence, now hardly reports any incidents.

Take 'preemptive measures' to protect vulnerable people from heat: NHRC to 11 states

NEW DELHI: In view of rising temperatures, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday asked authorities across the country to take measures to protect the most-vulnerable sections of society from the dangers of heatwave conditions.
The commission said National Crime Records Bureau data shows that 3,798 people reportedly died between 2018 to 2022 due to heat and sunstroke. The number of deaths was high in 11 states, including Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Bihar.
In view of heatwaves particularly in the northern, central and western parts of the country, NHRC has written to these 11 states, asking them to take immediate preemptive measures to protect vulnerable people, especially economically weaker sections, outdoor workers, the elderly, children and the homeless.
The commission has also asked them to make adequate arrangements for shelters and relief material, amend working hours and ensure standard procedures for treating heat-related illnesses. NHRC has sought action-taken reports on measures implemented from the 11 states — Punjab, Haryana, UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan.
NCRB data from these states shows that they account for 3,566 of the 3,798 deaths reported between 2018-2022. In UP, 508 people died of heatstroke, it was 470 in Maharashtra, 467 in Bihar and 466 in Telangana.
In its letter to the states, the NHRC mentioned the National Disaster Management Authority’s guidelines to mitigate impacts of heatwaves. Besides standard protocols for treating heat-related illnesses, the guidelines also call for activating public spaces such as schools, anganwadi centres and community halls with adequate ventilation, fans, drinking water and basic medical supplies.
Fans, cool roof materials and ORS sachets must be provided to families in informal settlements and labour colonies, the NDMA guidelines state. For workplaces, it calls for providing shaded rest zones, hydration support and encouraging the use of protective clothing.
Between 2013 to 2022, the highest number of deaths — 1,908 — due to heatwaves was reported in 2015 followed by 1,338 in 2016 and 1,274 in 2019, according NCRB data on deaths for all states and UTs due to heatwave shared by the govt in Parliament.

Impotency slur can't be abetment to suicide a month later, says SC

NEW DELHI: Hurling ‘impotent’ and ‘infertile’ slurs at the husband in public by his estranged wife and her near relatives could be hurtful, but these cannot be construed to be an abetment for the man to die by suicide a month later, Supreme Court has said.
An engineer married an MBA woman in Sept 2013. Barely two months later, their relationship got strained and her parents and relatives came to the man’s home and abused him and his family in filthy language and insulted him by calling him ‘impotent’ and infertile. They took her with them to her parental home.
They allegedly threatened to slap a false dowry case against him and his parents to get them arrested. The man committed suicide exactly a month after the incident as he went into depression on being shamed. His mother gave police torn pages of his diary narrating the harassment he underwent. The police charged the woman and her relatives under Section 306 IPC (abetment to suicide). The HC rejected their pleas for quashing the case.
Dealing with the appeal against the HC order, a bench of Justices A S Oka and A G Masih said, “While the remark allegedly made – questioning the manhood of the deceased could be hurtful and may affect a person’s dignity but it cannot, in itself and especially after a gap of nearly a month between the incident and the suicide, be construed as a sufficient provocation that would impel an ordinary, reasonable person to take such an irrevocable step.”
The bench said there had been no contact between the woman and her relatives and the man, either in person or on phone, to indicate continuous harassment or torture or any sort of pressure at the hands of the accused to impel the man to take the drastic step.
Writing the judgment, Justice Masih said, “From the suicide note, no abetment can be said to have been established that the accused instigated the deceased or there being any persistent cruelty or harassment which would make out an offence of abetment of suicide.”
